Dorchester County was named for Dorchester, Massachusetts. In 1696 Congregationalists from that town moved south and established a new settlement called Dorchester which was abandoned by 1788. The parish in which it was located continued to be referred to as St. George Dorchester. Today key cities and towns in the county in include St. George, North Charleston, Summerville, Jedburg and Harleyville.
The county seat today is the town of St. George, which also took its name from the old parish. The town of St. George SC has over 2,200 residents.
The town of Summerville SC was settled in the late eighteenth century as a summer resort for planters who wished to escape the malaria prevalent on their rice plantations; the town later became a winter resort also. Today, Summerville SC is a thriving town and has one of the highest growth population rates in the southeast with over 25,000 residents and is quickly becoming a bedroom community of Charleston SC due to its affordable housing prices.
North Charleston was incorporated in June 1972, and the city has since tripled its population to over 80,000 since and encompasses more than 60 square miles. North Charleston has become South Carolina's third largest municipality. North Charleston attracts more than 2 million visitors annually and includes attractions such as a 13,500-seat coliseum (home to East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) minor league hockey team the SC Stingrays), a convention center, and a performing arts center.
